Apple’s AI Journey
Apple introduced the Apple Intelligence feature at WWDC24 back in June. However, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, some Apple employees believe the company is two years behind its competitors in AI development.
Apple Intelligence Features
The Apple Intelligence includes several features, such as AI notification summaries, intelligent prioritization for important alerts, a new Siri with personal context, Image Playground, Genmoji, and more. However, one of the main challenges is that Apple Intelligence primarily depends on models that can run on-device.
Device Requirements
To run Apple Intelligence, users will need a device equipped with at least an A17 or M1 chipset, along with 8 GB of memory. This limitation means the volume of information processed is inherently limited, which is why Apple has chosen to integrate Siri with ChatGPT.
GPT-4o Integration
Apple will support GPT-4o across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. GPT-4o will be integrated into Siri and Writing Tools to help reduce the knowledge gap between Siri and competitors like ChatGPT. According to Mark Gurman, Apple’s internal research shows that ChatGPT is about 25% more accurate than Siri and can answer 30% more questions.
Potential for Apple to Catch Up
Despite being behind, Gurman believes that Apple can catch up, much like it did with Apple Maps. Apple’s vast device ecosystem gives it an advantage to quickly deploy AI features across its product line, with the M4 Macs expected to accelerate AI capabilities. Apple Intelligence is projected to be available on nearly every Apple device with a screen by 2026.
Future Outlook
The iPhone SE is set to receive the new intelligence system in March with the A18 chip, while the entry-level iPad is expected to be updated later in 2025.
